This Easter I had a kind invitation from Top Channel to share with the audience how to dye Easter eggs. My idea was to give you some information on how we can naturally dye eggs. Nowadays there are endless ready-made decorations available in the market, such as stickers, industrial colors, glitters and so on. This method that I’m about to share is pretty new for households such as myself (taking into consideration all the options listed above), but years ago, in absence of industrial food colors, fruits and veggies were the best choices.
Since colors obtained from fruits and veggies are totally natural and have no chemicals added, they require a considerable amount of time in order to get beautiful colored eggs. I suggest to you to use 3 plastic water bottles, cut the bottleneck and use them as your containers to immerse the eggs. Once colored, you just discard these containers and you won’t need to wash dishes. Proficient, right?
Below I’m sharing the ingredients and measures, while I invite you to watch the video where I show you how to color them.
[lt_recipe name=”How to naturally dye Easter eggs” servings=”30 eggs” prep_time=”20M” cook_time=”1H” total_time=”1H20M” difficulty=”Easy” print=”yes” image=”https://bakemydayhappy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/easter-eggs.jpg” ingredients=”Yellow coloring:;• 2 tbsp. turmeric;• 5 cups water;• 5-10 white eggs;• 1 tbsp. vinegar;Blue/Green coloring:;• ½ purple cabbage, shredded ;• 5 cups water (more if needed to cover the cabbage);• 5-10 eggs (brown & white);• 1 tbsp. vinegar;Pink/Red coloring:;• 1 kg red beets cut into bite-size chunks;• 5 cups water (more if needed to cover the red beets);• 5-10 eggs (brown & white);• 1 tbsp. vinegar;” ]Start by cleaning all your eggs using water and mild soap. This process will help eggs get well colored;Boil the eggs on low heat to prevent from crackling for about 20 minutes; In a small pot add the turmeric and the water. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the vinegar. Mix and set aside to cool down; Continue with the pink/red color by placing the beet chunks in a large pot and cover with water. Let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes or until the beets are soft. Add more water if needed. When the beets are nice and soft, strain the liquid to a large container, add the vinegar and stir. Set aside to cool down. ATTENTION! Do not discard the beets. Make a nice dressing and eat them as a salad; In the same pot where you boiled the beets, add the shredded cabbage and cover with water. Let it boil until the cabbage is cooked through. Add more water if needed. When the cabbage is nice and soft, strain the liquid, add the vinegar and mix well. ATTENTION! Do not discard the cabbage, just season it with salt, vinegar, garlic, olive oil and enjoy it as nice salad; Now that the colorings are ready, transfer them to the plastic bottles we prepared ahead. Submerge the white eggs to the turmeric and set it aside. To the other two colors, submerge both brown and white eggs. Each of them will get different shades while coloring, such as green for the brown eggs & blue for white eggs merged in cabbage dye, pink for the white eggs & red for the brown eggs merged in the beet dye. Let the colors set overnight and the next day, pull the eggs out the food colors and let them dry. Polish the eggs using a cotton ball dipped in sunflower oil. [/lt_recipe]
